SCU Roommates Go Viral Together 30 Years Later

Among all of the stories at the SCU Grand Reunion, you may have missed “the viral shoe story.” Class of 1992 graduates and SCU roommates for four years, Amanda Rose and Angela Salvetti Caltagirone, laughed about their unexpected collaboration in social media with a series of simple shoe videos.

The collaboration started with Amanda’s viral weight loss story. Amanda lost 140 pounds in 2018 and was below her Santa Clara graduation weight. Her story went viral. In losing 140 pounds, Amanda also lost a shoe size. Enter Angela, now the General Manager of Vionic Shoes, who sent Amanda an entire rainbow of shoes to meet her new fashion needs.

Amanda then appeared in a series of TikTok videos, including one where she holds up two shoes — her 280-pound shoe, a wide-width shoe with extra-support, and her 140-pound shoe, a slender Vionic beach shoe. Amanda thanks the larger shoe that supported her through her weight loss, but she notably wears slender bright shoes in all of her social media videos, videos that wrack up over a million views a month.

“In all of those years at SCU, never once did we discuss leading national brands and here Angela is at Vionic Shoes. I certainly never imagined that I would end up as a viral weight loss case. And then the unexpected shoe videos on top of this? We just giggled!” Amanda offered.

In one of her videos, Amanda thanks Angela for the shoes, adding, “Remember, kids! Be very nice to your roommate! She may grow up to lead a national shoe brand!”
